Chumani Hempe
Chumani Hempe is a founder and Managing Director of Ingwili Enterprise (PTY) LTD. We as the company produces and supplies poultry and vegetables to local’s stalls, supermarket, schools and individuals. We pride in producing quality vegetables (cabbages, spinach, potatoes, beetroot, green pepper and sweet potatoes) that are grown in an organic way as far as we can reach, our products are grown from the ground with less use of artificial fertilizers and more of animal manure strictly from our poultry and livestock.
We started operating in 2015 with only veggies that were less than 1000 heads in total excluding potatoes, due to complications we had along the way we decided to pause end 2016. In 2018 I Chumani Hempe took the money I got from the sponsor as I was completing my MSc in 2018 and decided to start again and that’s when I registered the business and introduced poultry (Broilers) and I operated until the end of the year but experienced a great loss due to spread of infection. This loss left me out of plans until I was introduced to Lovedale CFER in 2019 which came through for me and awarded me with a grand/loan at the end of 2019 that was amounting up to R15000.93. I used all this money to purchase new stock of 200 broilers and feed.
As I started this new journey it was like I’m walking in the new eden but entrepreneurship life is much more complicated than it looks like because as much as I thought things were going to be better for me more challenges came through. I lost 50% of my stock due to load shedding as it was still common in December 2019 and I couldn’t make any profit but a loss. I managed to stock again in February and sold some but before it knew the world came to an end to me when the introduction of covid19 took place in our Country. In a stock of 150 broilers I lost more than 50% as they authorities couldn’t allow us to go get feed or medication. So as we stand I’m am stranded but coping.
However, on the other side so far our vegetables are doing so well. We have about 5000 heads of cabbage that are in different stages of growth. We hope that this winter season won’t affect us much as we still plan to plant more.

Simba agricultural projects
Siyabulela Kolanisi is a founder and Managing Director of Simba Agricultural Projects. The farm at the moment cultivates 15 hectares of the land and it produces and supplies Cabbages Potatoes, Spinach, Maize and Lucerne.
The business started operating in 2018 and as an upcoming farmer you face many challenges. I started with cabbage and maize but the business didn’t make much profit because some of the cabbage got rotten. The main challenge was that we didn’t have enough fertilizer, enough water and enough chemicals to take care of the cabbage. But the demand of the cabbage from the local markets and community gave Mr Kolanisi enough motivation to continue the following year and do better.
As I started this journey I thought it was a walk in the park but entrepreneurship is much more complicated than it looks like because as much as I thought things were going to be better for me more challenges came through. But fortunately I met Mr Mgquba along the way who made sure my business complies with CIPC and Complies with SARS. He has always been guiding the business on how to access the markets because previously we were focused mainly on supplying individuals but the business now has grown and supplies the local’s shops and supermarkets. With the support he has been giving the business managed to pull through even through the difficult Covid-19 pandemic that changed everything, we continued to operate and cultivate land even though many business had closed. We have cabbage now at different stages that is almost ready to go to the market.
The CFERI has donated fertilisers to make sure the business continues to service its community. The business currently employs 14 community members. The main aim is to inspire and upskill the youth into doing things for themselves because well all know South Africa is facing huge unemployment rate. We have so much land that remains unused so if we can afford our youth enough opportunity to learn, I am certain they will be inspired to start their own businesses.
